Switchback
含义: A zigzag section of trail that goes back and forth up a steep slope.
Switchbacks are how trails conquer steep terrain — instead of going straight up (which would be brutal and cause erosion), the trail zigzags back and forth at a gentler grade. 'How many switchbacks?' is how hikers gauge difficulty. Endless switchbacks can be mentally grueling even though the grade is manageable. Cutting switchbacks (taking shortcuts between zigzags) is a cardinal sin that destroys trails.
