Rule of thumb
含义: A general guideline or practical principle based on experience rather than exact measurement.
Used to preface informal advice or practical guidelines. A rule of thumb isn't scientific — it's a shortcut that works well enough most of the time. Very common in American professional and casual speech for sharing practical wisdom.

起源与历史
First attested in English in 1685 by Scottish preacher James Durham in his commentary on the Song of Solomon. The phrase most likely derives from tradesmen — brewers, carpenters, and farmers — who used their thumb width (roughly one inch) as a rough unit of measurement. The debunked folk etymology linking it to a supposed English law permitting wife-beating with a stick no thicker than a thumb has no historical basis, as legal historian Henry Ansgar Kelly demonstrated in 1994.
