Crosstown
含义: Going east-west across Manhattan, perpendicular to the uptown-downtown axis.
Since Manhattan's subway lines mostly run north-south (uptown-downtown), getting across town east-west is notoriously difficult. A 'crosstown bus' goes east-west. 'Crosstown traffic' is the bane of NYC commuters. Jimi Hendrix even named a song after it. The word captures a uniquely NYC transit frustration.
