surgery
Meaning: Medical treatment involving cutting into the body; a doctor's consulting room
The word 'surgery' has two main British meanings: medical procedures involving incisions, and a doctor's or dentist's consulting room or practice. In the UK, you go to the doctor's surgery for an appointment. MPs also hold surgeries where constituents can meet them. Americans rarely use the term for a doctor's office.
