receive
Meaning: To get or be given something; to experience or be subjected to
'Receive' means to be given something or to accept something sent to you. It's more formal than 'get'. 'Receive' can also mean to experience ('receive criticism') or to welcome guests. 'On the receiving end' means being the target of something, usually negative.

From Anglo-Norman French 'receivre', from Latin 'recipere' meaning 'to take back, to regain' (re- 'back' + capere 'to take'). The same 'capere' root gives us 'capture', 'capable', 'accept', and 'recipe' (literally 'take!' — a doctor's instruction).
