A 'pilot' is a person who operates the controls of an aircraft or spacecraft. The word can also refer to a guide for ships in harbours, or as an adjective describing a trial version of something, as in 'pilot programme' or 'pilot study.' As a verb, it means to act as pilot of a vehicle or to test something on a small scale.
