velocity
Meaning: The speed of something in a given direction; a vector quantity that describes both how fast an object is moving and in which direction.
In physics, velocity differs from speed because it includes direction. An object moving at 60 mph northwards has a different velocity from one moving at 60 mph southwards, even though their speeds are identical. In business and technology, 'velocity' is often used metaphorically to describe the rate of progress, as in 'development velocity' in agile software teams.
Examples
- The velocity of the spacecraft was calculated to ensure it would reach the correct orbit.
- Wind velocity increased dramatically as the storm approached the coast.
- The team measured their development velocity to predict how many features they could deliver per sprint.
