ultrasound
Meaning: A diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures inside the body, commonly used during pregnancy and to examine organs such as the liver, kidneys, and heart.
Ultrasound (also called ultrasonography or a sonogram) is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation, making it particularly safe for monitoring foetal development during pregnancy. Beyond obstetrics, it is widely used in cardiology (echocardiography), musculoskeletal assessment, and emergency medicine. The term can refer both to the sound waves themselves and to the imaging procedure or scan.
