subjunctive
Meaning: A verb mood used to express wishes, hypothetical situations, demands, or suggestions, as in 'If I were you' or 'I suggest he leave immediately.'
The subjunctive is far less prominent in modern English than in languages like French, Spanish, or German. In British English, the mandative subjunctive ('I insist that he be present') has been partly replaced by constructions using 'should.' However, fixed expressions like 'if I were you,' 'come what may,' and 'God save the King' preserve the subjunctive in everyday speech.
Examples
- The phrase 'if I were you' uses the subjunctive mood to express a hypothetical condition. If I were you'这一短语使用虚拟语气来表达假设条件。La expresión 'if I were you' emplea el modo subjuntivo para expresar una condición hipotética.「If I were you」というフレーズは、仮定条件を表すために仮定法を用いている。If I were you'라는 표현은 가정적 조건을 나타내기 위해 가정법을 사용하고 있다.
- In formal writing, the subjunctive appears in clauses following verbs like 'recommend' and 'insist. 在正式写作中,虚拟语气出现在'recommend'和'insist'等动词后的从句中。En la escritura formal, el subjuntivo aparece en cláusulas que siguen a verbos como 'recommend' e 'insist'.格式ばった文章では、「recommend」や「insist」のような動詞に続く節で仮定法が現れる。격식체 문장에서 가정법은 'recommend'나 'insist' 같은 동사 뒤의 절에서 나타난다.
- Many native speakers use the subjunctive instinctively in set phrases without recognising it as a distinct mood. 许多母语者在固定表达中本能地使用虚拟语气,却没有意识到它是一种独立的语气。Muchos hablantes nativos utilizan el subjuntivo instintivamente en expresiones fijas sin reconocerlo como un modo diferenciado.多くの母語話者は、仮定法を独立した法として認識することなく、定型表現の中で直感的に使っている。많은 원어민들은 가정법을 별도의 법으로 인식하지 못한 채 정형화된 표현 속에서 직관적으로 사용한다.
