reverb
Meaning: The persistence of sound after the original source has stopped, caused by multiple reflections of sound waves off surfaces. Also, an electronic effect that simulates this natural phenomenon.
Reverb (short for reverberation) is ubiquitous in music production and architectural acoustics. In natural settings, it is what makes a cathedral sound different from a carpeted room — the reflections create a sense of space. In recorded music, reverb is one of the most commonly applied effects, used to add depth and atmosphere. Audio engineers distinguish between different reverb types: room, hall, plate, and spring reverb.
Examples
- The natural reverb of the stone chapel gave the choir's performance an ethereal quality.
- The producer added a touch of reverb to the vocal track to make it sit more naturally in the mix.
- Excessive reverb in the conference room made it almost impossible to understand the speakers clearly.
