remission
Meaning: A temporary or permanent decrease in the severity of disease symptoms; in other contexts, the cancellation or reduction of a debt, penalty, or sentence.
In medicine, remission can be partial (symptoms reduced) or complete (no detectable signs of disease). Cancer patients 'in remission' have no measurable evidence of cancer, though the term does not always mean the disease is cured. In legal and financial contexts, remission refers to the forgiveness of a debt or the reduction of a prison sentence. 'Go into remission' is the common collocation.
