Meaning: To assign to a lower rank, position, or status; in British football, to move a team to a lower division as a result of poor performance.
Relegate has both a general and a specifically British sporting sense. In general use, it means to demote or push something to a less important position: 'relegated to a footnote.' In football, relegation is the opposite of promotion — teams finishing at the bottom of a league are relegated to the division below.
