proscribe
Meaning: To formally forbid or condemn something as harmful or unacceptable, especially through an official decree or regulation.
Proscribe is stronger and more formal than 'prohibit' and carries connotations of condemnation as well as prohibition. In British law, a 'proscribed organisation' is one that has been officially banned, typically for terrorism-related activities. Frequently confused with 'prescribe' (to recommend or order), which has the opposite meaning. Common collocations include 'proscribed organisation,' 'proscribed substance,' and 'proscribed conduct.'
