polyhedron
Meaning: A three-dimensional solid shape with flat polygonal faces, straight edges, and sharp vertices.
Common polyhedra include cubes, tetrahedra, and octahedra. The five Platonic solids are regular polyhedra where every face is an identical regular polygon. Euler's formula (V - E + F = 2) relates the number of vertices, edges, and faces of any convex polyhedron. The plural is polyhedra or polyhedrons.
Examples
- A cube is the most familiar example of a regular polyhedron.
- The students built models of different polyhedra using straws and connectors.
- Euler's formula elegantly relates the vertices, edges, and faces of any convex polyhedron.
