polygon
Meaning: A closed two-dimensional shape with three or more straight sides and angles.
Polygons are classified by the number of sides they have: triangles (3), quadrilaterals (4), pentagons (5), hexagons (6), and so on. A regular polygon has all sides and angles equal. Polygons are fundamental in computer graphics, where complex surfaces are rendered as meshes of thousands of tiny polygons, typically triangles.
Examples
- A hexagon is a polygon with six sides and six angles.
- The computer game rendered each surface using millions of tiny polygon meshes.
- The children sorted the shapes into polygons and non-polygons during the maths activity.
