phytoremediation
Meaning: The use of plants to absorb, concentrate, or break down contaminants from polluted soil, water, or air.
Phytoremediation is a subset of bioremediation that specifically uses plants and their associated soil microorganisms to clean up contaminated environments. Certain plants, known as hyperaccumulators, can absorb heavy metals from the soil in concentrations far higher than most species can tolerate. It is a low-cost, sustainable approach but can be slow.
Examples
- Sunflowers were used in phytoremediation efforts following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster to extract radioactive caesium from the soil.
- Phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated land uses plants that naturally accumulate metals in their tissues.
- Willow trees are commonly planted in phytoremediation projects because they absorb large quantities of water and dissolved pollutants.
