nationalise
Meaning: To transfer ownership or control of a private enterprise, industry, or asset to the state or national government.
Nationalise is the mirror image of privatise and is equally politically charged. The post-war Labour government nationalised coal, steel, railways, and the health service, creating the mixed economy that defined Britain until the 1980s. In modern usage, calls to renationalise rail, water, or energy appear frequently in left-leaning politics. The word can also mean to make something national in character or scope, though this sense is less common.
