mortality
Meaning: The state of being subject to death; the death rate in a given population, especially from a particular cause or during a particular period.
Mortality is used both philosophically (human mortality, the awareness of death) and statistically (mortality rate, infant mortality). In public health, mortality rates are key indicators of a population's health. 'Infant mortality' (death before age one) and 'maternal mortality' (death during or shortly after childbirth) are particularly important measures of healthcare quality. The opposite is 'immortality.'
