mindfulness
Meaning: A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, calmly acknowledging and accepting feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.
Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation but has been adapted for secular clinical use, particularly through Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). It is now widely recommended by the NHS for preventing recurrent depression. The practice has become mainstream, with apps, workplace programmes, and school curricula incorporating mindfulness exercises.
