metaphor
Meaning: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable, in order to suggest a resemblance.
Metaphor is one of the most fundamental devices in language, used not only in literature but throughout everyday speech and thought. Cognitive linguists argue that much of human thinking is metaphorical — we routinely speak of 'grasping ideas,' 'building arguments,' and 'falling in love.' A mixed metaphor occurs when two incompatible metaphors are combined, often with unintentionally comic results.
