lagoon
Meaning: A shallow body of water separated from the open sea by a barrier such as a reef, sandbar, or narrow strip of land.
Lagoons are found along coastlines worldwide and are often ecologically important, supporting mangroves, seagrasses, and diverse marine life. Venice is built on islands within a lagoon. In British usage, 'lagoon' also refers to artificial pools used for sewage treatment or industrial waste storage (sewage lagoons). The Venice Lagoon and the atolls of the Pacific provide the most iconic natural examples.
