integration
Meaning: The process of combining or incorporating different elements into a unified whole; in social contexts, the process by which people from diverse backgrounds become full and equal participants in society whilst maintaining their cultural identity.
Social integration is often presented as a middle path between assimilation (losing one's identity) and segregation (living apart). In Britain, integration policy focuses on shared values, English language proficiency, and civic participation. In computing, system integration connects different software components. In mathematics, integration is the reverse of differentiation. In education, integration refers to including children with special needs in mainstream schools. Racial integration was a central goal of the American civil rights movement.
