hydroponics
Meaning: The cultivation of plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water-based growing medium.
Hydroponic systems allow plants to grow faster and yield more than traditional soil-based agriculture because nutrients are delivered directly to the roots. The method uses significantly less water and can be set up in urban environments, including vertical farms. It is particularly useful for growing salad leaves, herbs, and tomatoes year-round.
Examples
- The vertical farm uses hydroponics to grow lettuce and herbs in the centre of the city without any soil.
- Hydroponics allows farmers to grow crops in regions where the soil quality is too poor for conventional agriculture.
- She set up a small hydroponics system in her kitchen to grow fresh basil and coriander throughout the winter.
