fresco
Meaning: A technique of painting on freshly applied wet plaster, so that the colours become fixed as the plaster dries; a painting executed using this method.
Fresco painting reached its peak during the Italian Renaissance, with Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling being the most celebrated example. The technique requires great skill because the artist must work quickly before the plaster dries. 'Buon fresco' (true fresco) involves painting on wet plaster, whilst 'fresco secco' uses dry plaster. The phrase 'al fresco' (in the fresh air) is a separate usage meaning outdoors.
