fjord
Meaning: A long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between steep cliffs, typically formed by glacial erosion.
Fjords are among the most dramatic landscape features on Earth, found primarily in Norway, Greenland, New Zealand, and parts of Canada and Chile. They form when glaciers carve deep valleys that are later flooded by the sea as the ice retreats. Scottish sea lochs, such as Loch Etive and Loch Sunart, are technically fjords. The alternative spelling 'fiord' is sometimes used but 'fjord' is standard in British English.
