fibrosis
Meaning: The thickening and scarring of connective tissue, usually as a result of injury, chronic inflammation, or disease. It can affect virtually any organ in the body.
Fibrosis represents the body's attempt to repair damaged tissue, but excessive scarring impairs organ function. Pulmonary fibrosis stiffens the lungs, hepatic fibrosis precedes cirrhosis of the liver, and cardiac fibrosis reduces the heart's ability to pump effectively. The condition is a major focus of pharmaceutical research, as no universally effective anti-fibrotic therapy yet exists.
Examples
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis progressively reduces lung capacity and remains difficult to treat.
- Repeated liver injury from chronic hepatitis can lead to fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis.
- The biopsy confirmed significant fibrosis in the cardiac muscle following the patient's second heart attack.
