euphemism
Meaning: A mild or indirect word or expression used in place of one considered too harsh, blunt, or offensive. For example, 'passed away' instead of 'died.'
Euphemisms are deeply embedded in English culture and serve to soften uncomfortable topics such as death, bodily functions, and employment termination. British English is particularly rich in euphemisms — saying someone was 'let go' rather than 'sacked,' or describing a toilet as 'the facilities.' Overuse of euphemisms can obscure meaning and is sometimes criticised in political and corporate language as a form of deliberate vagueness.
