Meaning: At serious risk of extinction, used especially of species whose numbers have declined to critically low levels.
The IUCN Red List classifies species by threat level, with endangered being one step below critically endangered. Endangered species receive legal protection under national and international law. The term is also used figuratively to describe anything at risk of disappearing, such as endangered languages or traditions.
