embolisation
Meaning: A minimally invasive procedure in which material is deliberately introduced into a blood vessel to block it, used to stop bleeding, cut off blood supply to tumours, or treat vascular malformations.
Embolisation is performed by interventional radiologists who thread a catheter through the arterial system to the target vessel and deploy blocking agents such as coils, particles, or glue. It is used to treat uterine fibroids (uterine artery embolisation), control haemorrhage after trauma, and starve tumours of their blood supply before surgery. The British spelling uses -isation. It is distinct from embolism, which is the pathological blockage of a vessel by a naturally occurring clot or debris.
Examples
- The interventional radiologist performed uterine artery embolisation as an alternative to hysterectomy for the patient's fibroids.
- Emergency embolisation of the splenic artery successfully controlled the internal bleeding following the road traffic accident.
- Pre-operative embolisation of the tumour's feeding vessels reduced blood loss during the subsequent surgical resection.
