effluent
Meaning: Liquid waste or sewage discharged into a river or the sea, especially from a factory or sewage treatment works.
Effluent can be treated or untreated and may contain a range of pollutants including chemicals, heavy metals, and biological contaminants. In the UK, the discharge of raw sewage effluent into rivers and coastal waters by water companies has become a major public controversy. The term is more formal and technical than sewage.
