didactic
Meaning: Intended to teach or instruct; when used critically, overly moralistic or preachy in a way that is patronising.
Didactic has both positive and negative senses. In education, it refers neutrally to teaching methods (a 'didactic approach' is one based on direct instruction). In literary criticism, however, calling a work 'didactic' usually implies that it sacrifices artistic quality in favour of heavy-handed moralising. Aesop's fables are examples of deliberately didactic literature.
Examples
- The novel was criticised for being too didactic, with characters who served merely as mouthpieces for the author's views.
- Didactic teaching methods, such as lectures and demonstrations, remain effective for conveying factual information.
- Aesop's fables are deliberately didactic, each concluding with a clear moral lesson.
