demodulator
Meaning: A device or circuit that extracts the original information-bearing signal from a modulated carrier wave, reversing the process of modulation.
Demodulators are the receiving counterpart to modulators and are present in every radio receiver, television set, and internet modem. The process of demodulation involves detecting changes in the carrier signal's amplitude, frequency, or phase and converting them back into usable data or audio. The term is almost exclusively technical, appearing in electronics engineering and telecommunications literature.
Examples
- The demodulator in the satellite receiver extracted the digital television signal from the downlinked carrier frequency.
- A quadrature demodulator was required to decode the phase-shifted signals used in the modern wireless standard.
- The analogue demodulator in the vintage radio set used an envelope detector to recover the AM broadcast audio.
