damping
Meaning: The progressive reduction in the amplitude of oscillations or vibrations in a system, caused by energy dissipation through friction, resistance, or other mechanisms.
Damping is a critical concept in mechanical and electrical engineering, acoustics, and seismology. An underdamped system oscillates before settling; an overdamped system returns slowly without oscillating; and a critically damped system reaches equilibrium in the shortest time without overshooting. Shock absorbers in vehicles, acoustic panels in concert halls, and resistors in electronic filters all rely on damping. The term is sometimes confused with 'dampening,' which strictly means making something moist.
Examples
- The shock absorbers provided sufficient damping to prevent the vehicle from bouncing excessively on uneven road surfaces.
- Critical damping of the galvanometer ensured the needle settled quickly without oscillating past the true reading.
- The acoustic damping panels installed in the recording studio eliminated unwanted reverberation and standing waves.
