Meaning: A line of police, soldiers, or other guards preventing access to or from an area; a barrier or perimeter established around a location.
Cordon describes a barrier formed by people or physical objects to restrict movement into or out of an area. Police cordons are established around crime scenes, accident sites, and demonstrations; military cordons surround areas during security operations; security cordons protect VIPs. As a verb, 'to cordon off' means to seal an area. In cookery, a cordon bleu is a separate usage.
