conjunction
Meaning: A word used to connect clauses, sentences, or words, such as 'and,' 'but,' 'or,' 'because,' and 'although.'
Conjunctions are divided into coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so), subordinating conjunctions (because, although, while, if, unless), and correlative conjunctions (either...or, neither...nor, both...and). The old school rule against starting a sentence with a conjunction has been largely abandoned by modern style guides. Effective use of conjunctions is key to creating cohesive, well-structured prose.
Examples
- The coordinating conjunction 'but' signals a contrast between two independent clauses.
- Subordinating conjunctions like 'although' and 'because' introduce dependent clauses that cannot stand alone. although'和'because'等从属连词引导不能独立成句的从句。Las conjunciones subordinantes como 'although' y 'because' introducen cláusulas dependientes que no pueden funcionar por sí solas.「although」や「because」のような従位接続詞は、単独では成り立たない従属節を導入する。
- The writer used the conjunction 'moreover' to add emphasis and connect her arguments.
