collateral
Meaning: Property or assets pledged as security for a loan; as an adjective, additional but subordinate, or occurring alongside something else.
In finance, collateral is an asset that a borrower offers to a lender as security — if the borrower defaults, the lender can seize the collateral. Property, vehicles, and investments can all serve as collateral. 'Collateral damage' refers to unintended harm caused by an action, particularly in military contexts.
