citation
Meaning: A reference to a source of information, especially in academic writing; also a formal mention of someone's achievements or a summons to appear in court.
In academia, citations acknowledge the ideas and work of others and allow readers to trace sources. Different disciplines use different citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago). A high citation count for a published paper indicates its influence in the field. Outside academia, citation can mean an official commendation or a legal summons.
