cacophony
Meaning: A harsh, discordant mixture of sounds; by extension, any chaotic or confused jumble of voices, opinions, or elements.
Cacophony is a favourite of broadsheet columnists and literary critics, used both literally (the cacophony of a building site, a protest march) and figuratively (a cacophony of competing demands). It implies not merely loudness but ugliness — an assault on the senses. In literary analysis, cacophony refers to the deliberate use of harsh-sounding words and consonant clusters for expressive effect, the opposite of euphony.
