bioremediation
Meaning: The use of living organisms, typically bacteria or fungi, to break down or neutralise pollutants in contaminated soil, water, or air.
Bioremediation harnesses natural biological processes to degrade hazardous substances into less toxic or non-toxic forms. It is generally cheaper and less disruptive than conventional remediation methods. Applications include cleaning up oil spills, treating contaminated groundwater, and detoxifying industrial waste sites.
Examples
- Bioremediation was used to clean up the oil-contaminated shoreline following the tanker spill.
- Scientists identified a strain of bacteria capable of breaking down industrial solvents through bioremediation.
- The bioremediation of the contaminated site involved introducing specially cultivated microorganisms into the soil.
