biopsy
Meaning: A medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the body for examination under a microscope to help diagnose a disease.
Biopsies are commonly performed to determine whether a lump or abnormal area is cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Different types include needle biopsy, surgical biopsy, and endoscopic biopsy. The tissue sample is sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results of a biopsy are often crucial in deciding the course of treatment.

- A needle biopsy is a less invasive procedure than a surgical biopsy and can often be performed under local anaesthesia.
