auscultation
Meaning: The act of listening to the internal sounds of the body, usually with a stethoscope, as a method of clinical examination to assess the heart, lungs, and abdomen.
Auscultation is one of the oldest and most fundamental clinical skills, taught from the first year of medical school. Heart auscultation can reveal murmurs, abnormal rhythms, and valve defects; lung auscultation detects wheezes, crackles, and reduced breath sounds. Abdominal auscultation listens for bowel sounds. Despite advances in imaging technology, auscultation remains a quick, non-invasive first-line assessment tool. The term collocates with 'cardiac,' 'pulmonary,' 'chest,' and 'stethoscope.'
Examples
- Auscultation of the chest revealed bilateral crackles, suggesting fluid accumulation in both lungs.
- The clinical skills examination required students to demonstrate correct auscultation technique at four standard positions on the chest wall.
- On auscultation, the GP detected a previously unrecognised heart murmur and referred the patient for echocardiography.
