armistice
Meaning: A formal agreement between opposing sides in a conflict to stop fighting, either temporarily or permanently; a ceasefire.
An armistice differs from a peace treaty in that it halts hostilities without necessarily resolving the underlying dispute. The most famous armistice in British culture is that of 11 November 1918, which ended fighting in the First World War. Armistice Day (also called Remembrance Day) is commemorated annually in the UK with two minutes' silence and the wearing of poppies.
