antiseptic
Meaning: A substance that prevents the growth of disease-causing microorganisms, applied to living tissue to reduce the possibility of infection.
Antiseptic differs from disinfectant in that antiseptics are safe for use on skin and living tissue, whereas disinfectants are intended for non-living surfaces. The term is also used figuratively to describe something that is scrupulously clean or lacking in character and warmth.
