antibody
Meaning: A protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a foreign substance (antigen) in the body, which helps to neutralise or destroy it.
Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins that bind specifically to antigens on the surface of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. Each antibody is highly specific to a particular antigen. Antibody testing became widely known during the pandemic as a way to determine past infection. Monoclonal antibodies — laboratory-produced antibodies that target specific proteins — are used in treating cancers and autoimmune conditions.
