angiography
Meaning: A medical imaging technique used to visualise the interior of blood vessels and organs, particularly arteries and veins, by injecting a contrast dye and taking X-ray images.
Angiography is essential in diagnosing conditions such as coronary artery disease, aneurysms, and vascular blockages. Coronary angiography (also called a cardiac catheterisation or 'angiogram') is one of the most commonly performed procedures in cardiology. The images produced are called angiograms. CT angiography and MR angiography are non-invasive alternatives that have become increasingly common. The term collocates with 'coronary,' 'cerebral,' 'pulmonary,' and 'renal.'
Examples
- Coronary angiography revealed a significant blockage in the left anterior descending artery.
- The vascular surgeon requested cerebral angiography to locate the source of the bleeding.
- CT angiography has largely replaced conventional catheter-based angiography for many diagnostic purposes.
