acidification
Meaning: The process of becoming more acidic, especially the lowering of pH in oceans, soils, or other natural systems due to increased absorption of carbon dioxide or other pollutants.
Ocean acidification is a direct consequence of rising atmospheric CO2, which dissolves in seawater to form carbonic acid. This threatens marine organisms with calcium carbonate shells, such as corals and molluscs. Soil acidification can result from acid rain or excessive use of certain fertilisers, reducing agricultural productivity.
Examples
- Ocean acidification threatens coral reefs by weakening the calcium carbonate structures that form their skeletons.
- The acidification of forest soils from acid rain has damaged tree root systems across Scandinavia.
- Researchers measured the rate of acidification in the North Atlantic over the past three decades.
