oedema
의미: An abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body's tissues, causing swelling. The British spelling retains the 'oe' ligature; the American form is 'edema.'
Oedema can be localised — as in ankle swelling from prolonged standing or an insect bite — or systemic, indicating serious conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, or liver cirrhosis. Pulmonary oedema, where fluid fills the lungs, is a medical emergency. Cerebral oedema, swelling in the brain, can follow head injuries or strokes. The term is ubiquitous in clinical medicine and collocates with 'pulmonary,' 'peripheral,' 'cerebral,' and 'pitting.'
