intersectionality
The interconnected nature of social categorisations such as race, class, gender, and disability, which create overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
Intersectionality, coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, argues that forms of oppression do not exist independently but intersect and compound one another. A Black woman, for example, may face discrimination that cannot be understood by examining racism and sexism separately. The concept has become central to contemporary social justice movements and academic gender and race studies, though it has also attracted criticism for being overly academic or divisive.
예문
- An intersectional approach to policy-making recognises that a disabled woman of colour faces barriers that cannot be addressed by looking at race, gender, or disability in isolation.
- The concept of intersectionality has transformed how scholars think about identity, power, and social justice.
- Critics of intersectionality argue that it fragments society into ever-smaller identity groups rather than promoting universal solidarity.
