gauge
의미: An instrument for measuring the amount, level, or contents of something. As a verb, to estimate or judge the amount, level, or character of something.
Gauge has multiple technical meanings: a fuel gauge shows how much petrol remains, a pressure gauge measures pressure, and wire gauge indicates the diameter of wire. In railways, the gauge is the distance between the rails — standard gauge in the UK is 1,435 mm. As a verb, it means to measure precisely or to form a judgement: 'gauge public opinion,' 'gauge the reaction.' The British spelling is 'gauge' (not 'gage,' which is the American variant in some technical contexts).
