angiogenesis
The formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature. It is a normal physiological process in growth and wound healing but also plays a critical role in tumour development.
Angiogenesis is tightly regulated by a balance of pro-angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors. In cancer, tumours hijack this process to secure their own blood supply, enabling rapid growth and metastasis. Anti-angiogenic therapies, which starve tumours of nutrients by blocking new vessel formation, have become an important class of cancer treatment.
예문
- The tumour triggered angiogenesis to establish a blood supply capable of sustaining its rapid growth.
